Refitting of Dentures: Denture Relines

Over time, your mouth naturally changes—just like the rest of your body. When teeth are missing, the jawbone is no longer stimulated and gradually shrinks (resorbs).

This can cause dentures to loosen, affect how your upper and lower jaws align, and put strain on your jaw joints. Loose dentures may also reduce your ability to chew properly, which can impact digestion and overall health.

A reline may be needed if your gums have changed due to weight loss, extractions, bone loss, aging, or illness. The good news is that dentures don’t always need to be replaced. A reline—usually completed the same day—adds new material to the fitting surface of your denture, improving comfort and fit. Relining affects only the fit, not the appearance or wear of the denture teeth.
